Finger Tricks for Speedcubing

Master essential finger tricks to execute algorithms faster. Learn proper grip, R moves, U moves, and practice tips for speedcubing.

Finger tricks are the foundation of fast cube solving. Instead of regripping the cube for every turn, speedcubers use precise finger and wrist motions to execute moves fluidly. Learning proper finger tricks can cut your solve time in half without learning a single new algorithm.

The Home Grip

Hold the cube with your left thumb on the front-left edge and your left fingers wrapped around the back of the left face. Your right thumb rests on the front face near the bottom-right, while your right index finger sits on top of the right face. This grip gives you instant access to R, U, F, and their inverses without regripping.

R and R' Finger Tricks

For R (clockwise), push the right face upward with your right index finger or ring finger in a flicking motion. For R' (counter-clockwise), pull down with your right thumb or push the back of the right face with your right middle finger. R2 can be executed as a quick double-flick. These are the most common moves in CFOP, so getting them smooth and fast is critical.

U and U' Finger Tricks

U'

For U (clockwise when viewed from the top), use your right index finger to push the back edge of the top face to the left. For U' (counter-clockwise from the top), flick the top face's right edge toward you with your left index finger. Many fast solvers can execute U and U' with a single wrist motion, keeping the cube stable throughout.

The Sexy Move: R U R' U'

The most fundamental trigger in speedcubing. This four-move sequence appears in countless algorithms and is the first combo every speedcuber should master. When executed with proper finger tricks, it takes less than half a second.

Practice Tips

Start slow and focus on using the correct fingers for each move. Practice individual triggers like R U R' U' (the "sexy move") hundreds of times until the muscle memory is automatic. Gradually increase speed only when accuracy is consistent. Drill common algorithm sequences (T-perm, Sune) to build real-world fluency. Avoid death grip -- a relaxed hold allows faster turns.

Quick Drill

Set a timer for 2 minutes and repeat R U R' U' continuously. Focus on keeping the cube stable and using only your fingers (no regripping). Track how many repetitions you can do -- aim for 60+ in two minutes.
